What will be the
IMPACT of
social isolation on
the mobility of
older people?

The Remobilize Project

Indoor and outdoor mobility enables an active life, with purpose and meaning in old age. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (the coronavirus) poses enormous challenges for the whole society.

Older people are being highly affected. Not only at greater risk of developing the severe forms of Covid-19, but also by the recommendations for social distancing.

The life-space mobility restrictions, particularly outdoors, leads to a decrease in the level of physical activity and results in impaired functional capacity, hinders the management of chronic diseases, and increases the risk of frailty.

What will be the impacts of this period of social distancing on the mobility of older people?

Which will be the mobility trajectories over the next few months, throughout the pandemic?

What factors will the recovery of pre-pandemic mobility levels depend on?

Researchers from different Brazilian universities joined in a research network called Remobilize (Network of Studies on Mobility in Aging) to conduct this study through online questionnaires and phone interviews.

What will be the impacts of this period of social isolation on the mobility of older people?

Mobility is an indicator of quality of life in old age. Older people with mobility impairment generally need help from other people and end up losing their autonomy. Watch the video on the side and understand everything about the project with the study coordinator Monica Perracini.

How to Participate in the Project

Hello

We invite you to participate in the study "Impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the mobility of elderly people living in the community: an exploratory longitudinal study".

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of social distance and social isolation measures caused by the coronavirus pandemic (covid-19) on the mobility of older people.

In order to study the effects of the pandemic on your mobility, we need some information, such as where you live, your physical health status and your level of physical activity, and whether you have difficulty carrying out your day-to-day activities. To understand the long-term effects, we will be monitoring you for a 12-month period. We will contact you after 3, 6 and 12 months from this first assessment.

We would like to stay in touch with you to know what will happen from now on. For that reason we would like to have your WhatsApp contact (if possible). We reassure you that your phone number will not be passed on to people outside the research team.

If the older person is unable to answer the questionnaire independently due to serious visual problems, cognitive problems (such as dementia) or are unable to handle the questionnaire even with the help of other people, we invite their family caregivers to answer. It will take you about 20-30 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

We guarantee the confidentiality of your responses (data), which will only be used for research purposes. This study will not imply risks or losses for the participants involved, with no discrimination in the selection of individuals.
